Clayton Kershaw Provides Huge Update on Return to Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts provided a positive update regarding left-handed pitcher and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw. According to Roberts, Kershaw will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday and looks even better than he did prior to his shut down.

“He’s gonna throw a ’pen (Wednesday),” Roberts said. “He looks really good. I would argue that he looks even better than he did even when he was kind of making his way back a few weeks ago, at this point in time. So I’m really encouraged by it. Just watching him stretch it out, he stretched out yesterday, came back today, didn’t feel anything. Feels good.”

The 10-time All-Star started throwing again on Tuesday after experiencing shoulder soreness last week. Kershaw was shut down for one week due to feeling soreness in his surgically repaired shoulder. This was the first time Kershaw had ever had surgery in his professional career.

The good news regarding soreness is that the MRI revealed no new damage. Kershaw said that he received some shots to help alleviate the discomfort and that he is hopeful that the shutdown doesn’t push back a timeline for returning.

“I think having this little couple day reset should help,” Kershaw said. “Obviously, any time it doesn’t feel good, you get worried just because you’ve been down that road,” Kershaw said. “But it was a good outcome with everything. The timeline is still on our side. … It could have been a lot worse, for sure.”

The 36-year-old last pitched at the MLB level in October against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the 2023 National League Division Series. The outing, arguably the worst in his career, was the last fans saw of Kershaw on the big league mound. He made one rehab start two weeks ago, throwing three innings and allowing one run with five strikeouts.
