Over the last three months, Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin four-star safety Hylton Stubbs , had been committed to the USC Trojans before backing off his pledge at the end of June. Throughout that time, the Miami Hurricanes never stopped recruiting the coveted defensive back, who committed to the in-state program Thursday afternoon.

CaneSport spoke with Hylton’s father, Harold Stubbs, about his commitment to the Canes and why the Stubbs family believed Miami was the best place to succeed both on and off the field.

“I really like the coaching staff and the organization,” Harold told CaneSport. “I think that the staff is well organized, and it’s similar to a military style. Everybody reports to someone, and it looks very organized as a whole.”

After taking official visits to both USC and Florida during June, Miami got the final OV of the summer. That is when the thoughts of backing off his pledge to the Trojans really began to rise, according to Harold.

“It happened over time, gradually,” he explained. “The official visit showed a lot. Not just with all the fun stuff, but with the organization of the people and how everybody was where they were supposed to be in meetings, and things were just very well put together.”

Now a Miami commit, Hylton, who is the No. 56 overall prospect and No. 5 safety in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, is ready to see what the Canes can do on the field this fall.

When making his final decision, the trajectory of each program played a critical role. At the end of the day, the family believed Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff were on the best path, but they would like to see that continue in the coming months.

“I just want to see them clean some stuff up,” Harold said. “All the teams were similar. USC, Florida, and Miami are similar as far as play on the field. They all made some mistakes that they shouldn’t have made last year, but I think Miami, with the way their staff is put together and the way they run things, I think they have a better chance to clean things up this year.”
