The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially recalled outfielder James Outman from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday and placed Jason Heyward on the injured list with a knee contusion.

Additionally, right-handed pitcher Gus Varland was recalled while left-handed pitcher Nick Ramirez was optioned.

Heyward provided an unsettling update on his injury on Thursday — saying it’s something he hasn’t felt before — and heads back to the IL for the second time this season. Fortunately, he didn’t suffer any tears in his knee, but he’ll miss more time with another injury. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team “dodged a bullet” with the injury.

Heyward returned from back tightness on May 10 and posted a batting line of .203/.299/.398 with seven doubles, two triples, four home runs, and 20 RBIs across 38 games, including 30 starts.

Outman returns to the Dodgers after finding his swing in the minors. After he was optioned in May, his hitting took off slashing .279/.393/.531 with nine home runs, 21 RBIs, and an OPS of .924.

Outman is not in the starting lineup on Friday but will be back in at center field on Saturday. Roberts said he expects Outman to play some center field against right-handed pitching. Andy Pages will still be an everyday player.

As for Heyward, he’s expected to be sidelined 1-2 weeks.
