Dodgers Add Randy Arozarena in Blockbuster Trade Proposal

Even after spending more than $1 billion this offseason, the Los Angeles Dodgers are facing a pair of critical shortcomings as the July 30 trade deadline rapidly approaches.

An injury-depleted starting rotation is likely the team’s biggest need, particularly after starter Dustin May underwent an unexpected season-ending surgery . But the tail end of the batting order also could use some reinforcement.

To address that need, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed a trade that would add some power to the outfield in the form of Tampa Bay Rays left fielder Randy Arozarena, in exchange for prospects Ronan Kopp, Jose Ramos and Diego Cartaya.

“Between Luis Robert Jr., Jazz Chisholm Jr., Randy Arozarena and Brent Rooker, the Tampa Bay Rays left fielder might be their preferred target,” Miller wrote of the outfield options most likely to be on the trade block. “Tampa Bay might also be the one most motivated to make a trade, with Arozarena’s salary for his two remaining years of arbitration eligibility likely to land somewhere around $12M in 2025 and $15M in 2026.”

Arozarena has seen his numbers dip from a 2023 All-Star campaign, as he’s slashed .202/.309/.362 on the year. But if he can return to his career .344 on-base percentage for the remainder of the season, he’d represent a significant boost for a Dodgers outfield that has collectively averaged a .294 OBP.

Miller’s proposal also would see the Dodgers retain the leading pieces of their elite farm system. Within this package, only Cartaya is a top-10 prospect, and his ranking might soon dip if he can’t raise the .228 batting average he’s seen since entering Triple-A this season.

Although Arozarena might not be the kind of blockbuster acquisition that Dodgers fans have grown used to in recent years, even a modest boost to the outfield’s offensive production could unlock a lot more flexibility for the roster and help propel a surge to the playoffs.

“Currently, the Dodgers’ outfield situation is less than ideal, and adding a reliable bat to the seventh spot in the lineup could provide much-needed depth,” William Frost wrote for Inside The Dodgers . “This move would allow the team to better utilize players like Andy Pages and Jason Heyward in platoon roles, while also giving flexibility to use Gavin Lux or Miguel Rojas in the ninth spot.”
