Dodgers closer to adding two multi-time All-Stars to infield

After the trade deadline, there were credible questions about whether the Los Angeles Dodgers did enough to place themselves in position to win a World Series.

There still are questions lingering about their pitching staff. Any questions about their lineup could be quickly answered though thanks to some internal reinforcements.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters before Friday's game against the Oakland Athletics that Max Muncy and Mookie Betts are both on track to play in simulated games Thursday.

This is a big step for both players and a positive sign for the Dodgers.

Betts, who has been out since June 16 with a broken hand , is one of the best players in baseball. He can solidify the top of the Dodgers' lineup and provide defensive versatility in the outfield and both middle infield spots.

Muncy's absence with an oblique injury has lasted since March 15 . His bat will be welcome in the middle of the Dodgers order for two reasons. Not only will they take his power, but putting him in the No. 5 spot in the order will help lengthen the lineup the way LA hoped to at the deadline.

Joining that duo will be Miguel Rojas and the recently acquired Tommy Edman .

Rojas has been dealing with a forearm injury since July 21. He gives LA quality veteran infield depth.

Edman, who the St. Louis Cardinals dealt to the Dodgers at the deadline, hasn't played in 2024 because of a wrist injury that required offseason surgery. His defensive versatility and reliable bat figure to give the back end of the Dodgers lineup a lift.

July and the early stages of August have been rough for LA. They're now 14-16 in their last 30 games. Getting Betts and Muncy back in the everyday lineup with Edman and Rojas providing bench depth should help stabilize the offense and put that group back in the realm of World Series contender.
