Lena Nirk: Fund public education adequately, leave private schools to free market
I am responding to the letter to the editor published on June 21 titled “School competition will cut costs and increase productivity." The author makes the above statement and challenges readers to “Think about it." Here are some questions. The concept of reducing cost and increasing productivity is a basic economic principle in business, classically applied to a factory producing widgets. Productivity is defined as output per unit of input, in the factory example inputs are labor and capital and output is widgets. How does this apply to public education which is a public good not a private business? How is the productivity the author wants to increase measured? Does religious education or homeschooling “compete” with public school or is it a choice parents make based on their their faith or the needs of their children?
