Baby found on highway was 'saved' by Hurricane Beryl as boy would not have survived usual summer heat

A one-year-old was found crawling through the grass along a major highway by a truck driver, after a days-long search for the missing infant boy in Louisiana .

When the boy was found, Sheriff Gary Guillory said that it "was a miracle" because he had survived for "two days with no water and no food" by himself outside. The kid had been missing since July 8th, when Calcasieu police discovered his sibling, who was four years old, dead in a neighboring pond.

That same day, hundreds of miles away in Mississippi, the mother of the boys, Aaliyah Jack, was taken into custody following a local media frenzy sparked by a police news release.

On a charge of neglecting to notify a missing child, Jack is being held in jail in Meridian, Mississippi, as she awaits extradition to Louisiana. Guillory warned that there might be more fees. After being admitted to the hospital, the child was released to child protective services on Wednesday.

"We call him a miracle baby," Sheriff Guillory said. "He did have insect bites all over his body, but he was in good spirits. We're just thankful."

The sheriff claimed that the favorable weather had helped them. He lamented, "The sun never really came out and heated up the air," alluding to the frequently oppressive summertime temperatures in Louisiana.

We had some leftover clouds from [Hurricane] Beryl, which likely helped him stay cool. We were quite fortunate." The baby's rescue story started on Monday when the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office got a call reporting that a body had been found in a pond close to the Vinton Welcome Center.

"Our first priority was to get it out to the news media and get some leads," Guillory said. "And that's exactly what happened."

A grandma called the sheriff's office on Monday night, worried about her grandchildren after reading the reports. Police issued a 'bolo' (be on the lookout) notice for the missing one-year-old and his mother after she told them the four-year-old had a younger brother.

A few hours later, Jackson was taken into custody at a Mississippi railroad stop. Tuesday morning, a sheriff's office marine division was searching for the missing youngster by boating through the pond where the brother had been discovered. Then, at approximately 09:00 EST (14:00 BST), they received a call from a truck driver on Interstate-10 close to the border between Texas and Louisiana, reporting that he had seen a baby "crawling" across a nearby ditch.

According to Guillory, the four-year-old's cause of death is still under investigation. There isn't an autopsy report yet.
