Nonprofit fills CEO seat
Louisville-based CASA of the River Region has named Jamie Noon the next CEO of the organization, effective June 24, according to a news release.<\p> Noon takes the reins from Leon Mooneyhan, a retired public educator who stepped in as interim leader after William Myers departed at the end of 2023 after 11 years as president and CEO. <\p>
LMPD chief resigns
Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel has resigned nearly two weeks after she was placed on suspension for her handling of a sexual harassment investigation. <\p> Mayor Craig Greenberg made the announcement at a press conference Tuesday afternoon, bringing Gwinn-Villaroel’s tenure as chief to an end less than a year after assuming the job.<\p>
These jobs soared during the pandemic and are here to stay
Part-time job listings soared during the Covid-19 pandemic and have yet to recede — a potential sign that both workers and employers see benefits in the arrangements. <\p> Beginning in early 2022, the share of part-time jobs posted on job-search engine Indeed grew 10% before leveling off in 2023. <\p>
New eatery coming to Highlands
A popular Kentucky-based Mexican restaurant chain is opening its fifth location in the Highlands.<\p> Las Margaritas Mexican Cuisine is moving into the former Señora Arepa and El Taco Luchador storefront at 938 Baxter Ave. Rene Cortez, Las Margaritas owner, announced the new location in a Facebook post on June 20. <\p>
BrightSpring makes $60M acquisition
BrightSpring Health Services (Nasdaq: BTSG) is expanding its footprint in the Sunshine State.<\p> The Louisville-based publicly-traded company has agreed to purchase Central Florida Hospice Inc. and Haven Medical Group LLC, collectively known as Haven Hospice, for a total of $60 million, according to a news release. <\p>
Original Fourth Street Live tenant closes
An original Fourth Street Live anchor tenant and the last standing Louisville outpost of a popular fast-casual dining chain has gone out of business.<\p> Management of the Downtown Louisville TGI Fridays location posted signs on the restaurant's doors notifying "loyal guests" the restaurant has permanently closed. Deputy mayor joins West End TIF board
Housing development, expanded nonprofit services, economic development, and youth initiatives are some of the pressing needs identified by West Louisville residents during a series of community engagement sessions held by the West End Opportunity Partnership (WEOP) earlier this year.<\p> At its meeting on Monday, the WEOP board began to outline the process it will use to address those needs by providing financial support to businesses and nonprofits in the community.<\p>
East End hospital opening
One of Louisville’s largest healthcare providers will open the doors to a new rehab hospital in the city’s East End this week.<\p> Through a joint venture, Baptist Health teamed up with Birmingham-based Encompass Health on the new 40 bed inpatient facility set to open at 11800 Bluegrass Parkway on Tuesday. According to a release, the hospital will provide essential services for patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions.<\p>
Apartment complex sold
An area apartment complex has sold in a multimillion dollar deal.<\p> Vaughan Village Apartments, located at 100 Crimson Creek Drive, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, sold in a $4.85 million deal on June 6. The multifamily property features 48 duplex-style units on a 9.17-acre lot. The complex was originally built in 1996 and located near the heart of E-town, a news release said. It is located only 10 miles north of the BlueOvalSK electric vehicle battery plant that's being built in Glendale, Kentucky, which has sparked economic development opportunities in the area.<\p>
Heaven Hill launches new whiskeys
One of the bigger names in the bourbon industry has recently announced several new offerings under the company’s name. <\p> Heaven Hill Brands is set to debut its Heaven Hill Grain to Glass series in the upcoming weeks. The initial launch will consist of three expressions with new mash bills: a bourbon, a wheated bourbon and a rye whiskey, according to a news release.<\p>
Well-known nonprofit CEO to step down
The leader of one of Louisville’s oldest nonprofits is stepping down after 10 years on the job.<\p> St. Joseph Children’s Home CEO Grace Akers says she plans to retire from the agency at the end of the year. She joined the organization in 2014, following a long career with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.<\p>
Hooters closes 2 locations
Hooters has closed two of its area locations.<\p> The Atlanta-based chicken wing chain shuttered stores at 4948 Dixie Highway in Louisville and 941 E. Lewis & Clark Parkway in Clarksville, Indiana. Google confirmed both of the closures on a search. And both restaurants have also been removed from the listing on the company's website. <\p>
$4M initiative gets new director
The Filson Historical Society has hired a program manager for its new African American History Initiative (AAHI).<\p> Jacqueline Hudson will begin working at the Filson on July 1. Hudson will supervise staff and interns tasked with collecting, preserving and sharing the stories of Black history and culture in Kentucky, Southern Indiana and the Ohio Valley region.<\p>
UPS selling off logistics unit
Louisville's largest employer is selling off a logistics business unit.<\p> United Parcel Services on Sunday announced it has entered into an agreement to sell its Coyote Logistics business unit to RXO Inc., for $1.025 billion. In a news release, UPS said, when complete, the sale will help drive its "better and bolder" strategy.<\p>

Most expensive homes sold in Jefferson County (May 28-June 3)
Nationally, newer homes are 12.4% smaller than older homes. <\p> According to data from the National Association of Realtors, newer home lots in Louisville are just 47% the size of pre-2000s lots. Analysis of the data show this is the fifth-most shrinkage of the 50 major cities part of the dataset. <\p>
