Tornado hit West End of Louisville, National Weather Service reports

An EF1 tornado hit Louisville's West End during a round of storms Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service determined.

"After reports of damage we sent a survey crew out to west Louisville along Woodland Ave. between Catapla St. and Cypress St. Preliminary info is an EF1 tornado with winds of 95 mph around 28th St. and Woodland," the NWS said in a statement posted to its account on X, formerly Twitter, shortly before 6 p.m.

Large trees and power lines were down in the Woodland Avenue area, and some houses were damaged.

Following the mid-afternoon storm, about 5,200 customers were without power in Jefferson County, LG&E reported.

By 8 p.m., that number had been reduced to about 1,500.

An EF1 tornado is considered a "moderate" twister on the scale used by the NWS, with wind speeds between 86 and 110 mph.

At about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, the NWS said survey crews in Harrison County, Indiana, determined an EF0 tornado with winds reaching 80 mph trailed for a mile, starting at Indiana Route 135 between Sky Aire Road and Indiana Route 335 and ending around Tee Road north of Corydon and southwest of Crandall.

Corydon and Crandall are 20-25 miles west of downtown Louisville.
