Humana, the Louisville-based health insurance giant, has announced its health care services branch of the company, CenterWell, will open 23 senior primary care centers in Walmart Supercenters.

The centers will operate under the CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers brand names, according to a press release from Humana .

"CenterWell is committed to providing seniors with high-quality health care that is accessible, comprehensive, and most of all, personalized," Dr. Sanjay Shetty, president of CenterWell, said in the release. "We are excited by the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner such as Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care."

    Here's what we know:

    What is CenterWell?

CenterWell Senior Primary Care provides "value-based care" to seniors and emphasizes measuring health outcomes in patients. Unlike fee-for-service care, the goal of CenterWell's model is to lower healthcare costs for underserved groups, provide greater patient satisfaction, and lower disease risk and health complications, the Courier Journal previously reported .

In 2023, CenterWell, a Humana subsidiary, announced the opening of its third location in Louisville. The primary care centers tend to be centralized around areas with lower socioeconomic resources such as Louisville's West End, to help bridge the gap in healthcare accessibility for the city's most vulnerable populations.

"We intentionally put our centers in underserved communities," Nick Judd, the Kentucky and Indiana market president, previously told The Courier Journal. "So, there's also a higher degree of disease state when you go into a lot of these communities, but the beauty of it is we're bringing them high-quality care right here in their own community."

Where will these clinics be located?

The 23 clinics will be found in clinical offices previously occupied by Walmart Health and anchored by a Walmart grocery store. Four states will soon welcome the CenterWell clinics — Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and Texas.

Walmart will be leasing the office space to CenterWell.

"We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built healthcare spaces to offer quality care to communities in four states," Brian Setzer, executive vice president, Walmart Health & Wellness, said in the release. "Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful healthcare delivery organization is a win for customers and patients, as we continue to focus on our core health & wellness business of pharmacy and optical."

In addition to the current leasing agreement with Walmart, CenterWell plans to expand in additional major metro areas in the future, including:

    • Atlanta
    • Dallas/Fort Worth
    • Jacksonville
    • Kansas City
    • Orlando
    • Tampa/St Petersburg

When will the new clinics open?

According to the press release, CenterWell expects to have these new clinics opened "no later than the first half of 2025."
