Jeff Brohm details Louisville’s path back to ACC title game

Louisville enjoyed immediate success under first-year head coach Jeff Brohm last season.

Winning 10 games, making the conference championship game and earns their way to the Holiday Bowl in 2023, there’s added pressure on the Cardinals to continue to perform well in the new-look ACC. Brohm revealed the key which he believes will help Louisville achieve similar heights this fall.

“I think you build a team that likes to compete, that loves football, that loves to work hard and win at a high level,” Brohm said. “We want to provide that atmosphere and that environment for our guys that they want to come to the building and put the work in. I think we have a group of guys that do that every day.

“While we had some good success last year, 10-1 at one point, we lost our last three games. I think because of that, there’s a lot of things to learn, a lot of areas to improve. I think it’s caused the hunger to get back in right away and understand if you want to be really good, you have to beat big-time opponents and find a way to win close games.”

The Cardinals ended up finishing the season 10-4, which included losses to in-state rival Kentucky in the regular season finale and Florida State in the ACC Championship game. The three-game skid ended with Louisville falling to USC 42-28 in the Holiday Bowl.

Despite the disappointing finish to one of the best 11-game stretches in Louisville football history, expectations of similar success in 2024 are apparent within the program.

“These guys we have with us here today, the entire football team, worked hard, grit off-season. They understand we have good challenges ahead of us this year,” Brohm said. “This is a competitive league with a lot of parity and a lot of good football coaches and players. If you don’t expect and bring your A game, play your very best, you’re not going to win.”

“We definitely accept that challenge and we’re looking forward to getting the season underway. Our guys have worked really hard.”

The next time fans will be able to watch their Cardinals in action will be during the season opener at home on Aug. 31 against Austin Peay. Louisville will also battle the likes of Notre Dame and Kentucky in non-conference play, as well as new conference opponents SMU and Stanford . They’ll begin ACC play against Georgia Tech in Week 4.
