Clayton School Board Talks Tax Rates
JONESBORO — The Clayton County Board of Education begins its millage rate public hearings Monday, July 29 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. A final public hearing and vote is scheduled Monday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. All meetings will be held at the school system’s Administration Complex, 1058 Fifth Ave., Jonesboro.
Stuff the Bus wouldn’t be possible without our Channel 2 viewers and their donations
They are three of our favorite words at Channel 2: Stuff the Bus! Our biggest community event of the year returns on Saturday at eight locations across metro Atlanta. Before kids go back to school, Channel 2 and our partners at Children’s Restoration Network will stuff the bus with new, donated school supplies for children in need. But the event wouldn’t be possible without viewers like you. Last July, Channel 2 viewers joined us to stuff seven buses with over 6,000 backpacks filled with brand new school supplies.
Starbucks baristas at two area stores win union elections
NORTH METRO ATLANTA — Baristas at two Starbucks locations in north Metro Atlanta won their union elections July 15 and 16. They join a growing movement of workers nationwide, calling for a voice and improved conditions on the job. Out of its more than 16,000 coffee shops in the country, there are currently 464 unionized Starbucks, according to unionelection.org.
Environmental groups pushing to delay Georgia Power gas turbines project
ATLANTA – Georgia Power should delay building three new “dual-fuel” turbines at Plant Yates near Newnan to allow time to consider potentially less expensive alternatives, an independent energy consultant said Wednesday. The Atlanta-based utility received bids late last week in an all-source procurement request for proposals (RFP) to expand its electrical generating capacity to meet Georgia’s rapidly increasing needs for power.
