LOWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — Lowell police say a man has been arrested after fleeing from police in a stolen car, causing a head-on crash and then running away on foot.

Around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Lowell Police Department says it got an alert from a license plate-reading camera of a stolen car.

Officers say they tracked down the car at the intersection of Main Street and Hudson Street, but it fled south down Hudson before they could engage. The stolen car, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, ended up causing a serious head-on crash with a northbound car near the Grand River Bridge, according to a release from the police department.

Then, the suspect, a 20-year-old man from Greenville, ran away on foot, the release says. Police launched a search, which included K-9 and drone units from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. After half an hour, police say they found the man nearby.

The Greenville man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, released and jailed on several felony and misdemeanor charges, according to the police department. The man’s name was not released Thursday, since he had not yet been arraigned.

Meanwhile, police say the northbound driver that was involved in the crash was hospitalized with injuries that were serious but not considered life-threatening.

Hudson Street was closed for hours as police investigated.
