Boy trapped in burning Pittsburgh-area home rescued after calling mom's cellphone
INGRAM, Pa. (KDKA) -- An 11-year-old boy trapped inside a burning home in Ingram used his cell phone to call his mom and help firefighters find him. Pittsburgh firefighters said they were called to help with a fire on Leslie Street just before 10:45 p.m. When they got there, a woman said her son was trapped up on the third floor, where arriving crews had reported heavy smoke. The boy used his cell phone to call his mom, telling her he was in a low closet area up on the third floor, firefighters said. The chief in command asked if the child could yell so firefighters could hear him, but his mom said he couldn't. So the chief told the mom to tell her boy to bang on the wall instead.Crews made their way to the third floor and found the boy in a small storage closet. He was conscious and alert and was taken to medics for evaluation.In a post on social media, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire thanked those involved in the rescue, writing, "Excellent work by all!" Officials didn't say how the fire might have started.
McCandless daycare director accused of abusing multiple children
McCANDLESS, Pa. (KDKA) -- The director of a daycare facility in McCandless has been charged with abusing multiple children. According to court paperwork, Melissa Populo, 38, of McKees Rocks, is facing charges stemming from the alleged abuse of at least five children at the Gloworms Academy located along Harmony Drive in McCandless Township.McCandless Police say that the alleged abuse was reported to them earlier this year by an employee at the daycare facility. Gun found at Pittsburgh airport security checkpoint during busy travel week
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- TSA officers at the Pittsburgh International Airport said they found a man's loaded gun inside his wife's carry-on bag during a busy holiday travel week. Transportation Security Administration officers stopped the West Virginia couple at a security checkpoint after finding a .22 caliber handgun loaded with five bullets in the wife's bag. She told officers she didn't know it was in there and that it belonged to her husband. He was traveling with her and confirmed it was his, officers said. MOON TWP. ― Police report bodies of two men were found floating in the Montour Run Creek on Friday afternoon. According to first responders, the call of a body located in a Moon Township portion of the creek was first received shortly after 4 p.m. June 28. As divers worked to recover the body from around 6 feet of water, they soon found a second body nearby in a portion of the creek that was around 10 feet deep.
