Spanky's wins A-J poll on top Texas Tech game-day restaurants in Lubbock

It was a hotly contested poll, but the people have spoken.

The results are in from this week's Avalanche-Journal poll , and the A-J's online audience selected Spanky's as the go-to restaurant for Red Raider fans in Lubbock on a Texas Tech football game day. The poll closed Friday, ahead of Saturday's Texas Tech vs. Abilene Christian University matchup set for 6:30 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Closely behind Spanky's was One Guy from Italy in second place, with Caprock Café coming in third and Chimy's in fourth among a list of 10 restaurants and eateries.

Here is what the restaurants are known for and why you should try them out.

Spanky's — 811 University Ave.

Fried Cheese. Do we need to say more?

Known for their fried cheese and burgers, Spanky's has been a Lubbock and Texas Tech student staple for years. Located conveniently across University Avenue from the Tech campus, this restaurant is just a short walk from the stadium.

Spanky's is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day except Sunday, with two happy hours throughout the afternoon and night.

One Guy from Italy — 1101 University Ave.

Another Texas Tech classic, One Guy from Italy is also just a short walk away from Jones AT&T Stadium, bars on Broadway and the university.

From pizzas to calzones and everything in between, One Guy from Italy has something for the whole family and is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The restaurant also has a second location at 4320 50th St.

Caprock Café —

If the above-mentioned restaurant is a TTU cult classic, Caprock Café is a Lubbock cult classic restaurant. With an extensive food and drink menu, it is truly "Where Texas Plays."

Supporting many local charities, this restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day, with a second location at 5217 82nd St.

Chimy's — 2417 Broadway

Of course, we had to include this honorable mention as it is popular among Texas Tech students and returning alumni. Serving TexMex bites and margaritas, Chimy's is right across from the university's main entrance and a stroll from the stadium.
