Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire awards last single-digit number for Red Raiders

Single-digit jersey numbers can be a status symbol on some college teams, the Texas Tech football team being no exception.

John Curry earned the last of those status symbols available among the Red Raiders this year. The linebacker from Coronado has been switched to No. 6, the last single-digit number not spoken for by a Tech player this season.

Actually, a few players had spoken for it. Tech coach Joey McGuire told the Avalanche-Journal in May that Curry, linebackers Justin Horne and Mike Dingle and cornerback Macho Stevenson all wanted No. 6.

Curry's getting it was another nod toward what he accomplished since the end of last season. The redshirt freshman has been the top backup to Ben Roberts at field inside linebacker since early in spring practice.

Curry previously wore No. 42. Stevenson has No. 12, Dingle No. 35 and Horne No. 36.

Texas Tech opens the season Saturday against Abilene Christian.
