Temperatures in West Texas are on the rise and are expected to hit dangerous levels this week.

After the National Weather Service issuing heat advisories for eastern portions of the South Plains and Panhandle on Tuesday afternoon, temperatures were expected to be hotter on Wednesday, with a forecast high of 101 for Amarillo and Lubbock, with lows only falling to the mid 70s. High temperatures are expected to climb to near 100 or above through the remainder of the week on the South Plains and Panhandle.

The NWS advises individuals to avoid being outside during these times and to call 911 if someone is suspected of having a heat stroke.

What are the symptoms of heat stroke?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, heat stroke occurs when a person's internal body temperature reaches 106 degrees or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat strokes can lead to permanent body damage and death if left untreated.

Symptoms of a heat stroke are:

    • Confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech.
    • Loss of consciousness (coma).
    • Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating.
    • Seizures.
    • Very high body temperature.

After calling 911, the CDC advise to get those affected by heat stroke to a cooler environment or shade and remove outer clothing. Also, try to cool down the person in one of the following ways:

    • A cold water or ice bath, if possible.
    • Wet the skin.
    • Place cold wet cloths on the skin.
    • Soak clothing with cool water.
    • Circulate the air around the person to speed cooling.
