A newborn boy reportedly rescued from a dumpster in North East Lubbock will remain in the hospital for several days until physicians are sure the infant is healthy to be discharged, according to court documents obtained by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Meanwhile, Lubbock police are still looking for the mother of the boy, identified in court documents as "Baby John."

According to LPD, a baby was found in a Lubbock dumpster about 4 a.m. Saturday in the 2700 block of East Third Street.

According to court documents filed by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, state police were called to the home after a man said he found the baby in a dumpster outside his home.

"Baby John was in a dumpster and there is no identifying information for the parents," the documents state.

The man said he took the infant into his home where his mother bathed the boy and eventually called EMS for help, according to the documents.

The department is now seeking temporary managing conservatorship of the baby.

In a statement to the A-J, the Lubbock Police Department expressed its gratitude for the outpouring of support and concern received from community members and beyond regarding inquiries surrounding the newborn's health.

"It is the department’s sincerest hope the public uses that same focus and determination to help investigators identify and locate the mother. Due to the status of the investigation, and in order to protect the integrity of the case, LPD will not comment on the medical state and health of the newborn at this time," said in the statement.

Anyone with information about the mother, the child, or information leading up to the discovery of the child is asked to call Crime Line at 806-741-1000 . You can remain anonymous.
