MBTA Orange Line: A Total Transformation
“I started on a train that took people to work,” remarked the Medford, Mass.-born travel writer Paul Theroux, as he embarked on the Orange Line to begin a long train journey from Boston to the tip of South America. Boarding at the newly opened Wellington station in the late 1970s, Theroux joined the 100,000 other daily Orange Line passengers on a line midway through a modernization project that would see both ends of the line entirely replaced.
Hurricane Ernesto is Gaining Strength: How Will It Affect Maine, New Hampshire, & Massachusetts?
Until recently, New England rarely had to worry about tropical storms and hurricanes. Over the last few years, we have seen that change, though. In September 2023, we had to deal with a pair of back-to-back storms. While those storms had lost much of their strength by the time they reached New England, they did hit us within days of each other. And after dealing with Debby last weekend, we are getting ready to deal with Ernesto this weekend.

Massachusetts Eliminating Vehicle Safety Inspections?
Do you think Massachusetts getting rid of the need for vehicle owners to bring their cars in for the yearly inspection would be a good idea?. The saying goes, "if they're doing it, why can't we?" This is considered one of the two things we have to do in the Baystate other than paying annual taxes every year. Otherwise, we'd be facing penalties for not doing so.

The beloved sketch comedy show is about to celebrate an impressive 50 years on NBC. We will also soon see the release of Saturday Night, a highly anticipated film about the dramatic lead-up to the show's first episode in the 1970s.

First Recorded Tornado Outbreak Walloped New England in 1787
Massachusetts experienced the first tornado – or whirlwind, as they called it – ever recorded in what we now refer to as the continental United States. Of course, there were likely many other tornados before then, but the European settlers armed with their quill pens and parchments hadn't arrived to write about them.
A Surprising Finding on Massachusetts Charter Schools
Urban charters raise test scores, nonurban charters lower them. Both boost college graduation. An influential 2013 study found that attending an urban charter school in Massachusetts boosts standardized test scores, but attending a nonurban one reduces them—despite the fact that both sets of schools are popular enough with families to hold admissions lotteries. This finding is congruent with other lottery-based research on charters, as well as observational evidence showing gains on test scores for many urban charters but few differences in other settings (see here for a review). However, schools influence much more than just test scores. Now that sufficient time has passed, we can return to the same sample of Massachusetts charter schools and study their impact on college enrollment and graduation.
