Rockville Celebrates Independence Day at Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park
The City of Rockville is hosting its annual Independence Day celebration at Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park in King Farm from 7-10 p.m. Thursday. Kicking off the event, Music by Uncle Jesse will perform until 8:45 p.m., when Mayor Monique Ashton and the city council will commemorate the holiday with a warm welcome. Then, the Victorian Lyric Opera Company will perform the national anthem before returning to Music by Uncle Jesse, who will continue performing until the fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.

Temperatures will only rise from here with the upper 90s expected for the day ahead.Saturday is a FIRST ALERT DAY for intense and potentially dangerous heat. Over a third of U.S. states have detected the West Nile virus so far this year, as mosquito-transmitted diseases continue to grow their presence in the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seven human cases were confirmed across seven states as of June 25. They took place in Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi and Tennessee. The rest were seen in mosquitoes, birds or other animals.

Summerville Man Dies in Fireworks Accident on Fourth of July
A Summerville man tragically lost his life in a fireworks-related incident during a Fourth of July celebration. Allen Ray McGrew, 41, succumbed to injuries sustained when a large firework device he placed on his head exploded. Dorchester County Sheriff's Office deputies and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene in the Crestwood subdivision around 10:23 p.m., where they discovered McGrew with severe head trauma.
