The African American community is no stranger to entrepreneurship. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Black Americans own 3.5 million businesses, employing over 1.2 million people. These entrepreneurs are at the forefront of a new generation of wealth and ownership for the Black community. However, Black-owned businesses thrive more in some American cities than others. As more Black entrepreneurs emerge, where are the best destinations to set up shop? Here are the U.S. cities with the most Black-owned businesses, according to a new survey from LendingTree.
Douglas Man Sentenced to Over 10 Years for Fatal Alien Smuggling Operation
A Douglas man has been handed a 130-month prison sentence for his role in an illegal alien smuggling operation that resulted in a death. Manuel Victor Gastelum, 27, received the sentence after pleading guilty to charges of Transportation of Illegal Aliens for Profit Resulting in Death. The sentencing by United States District Court Judge Rosemary Márquez took place last week, according to an official press release from the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Arizona.
Locavino Wins Fifth Wine Spectator Award of Excellence
Locavino wine café in Downtown Silver Spring has received Wine Spectator’s fifth consecutive Award of Excellence. In the 2024 Wine Spectator awards announced last month, more than 3,700 restaurants worldwide were recognized for their wine programs. Locavino was once again the only locally owned restaurant among the five restaurants in Montgomery County, which includes The Capital Grille, Fogo de Chão, Morton’s The Steakhouse, and Seasons 52.
