Suffolk County SPCA Holding Free Rabies Clinic Sept. 28 on World Rabies Day
World Rabies Day is a global initiative to raise awareness to eliminate rabies. Rabies is a preventable disease if treated. The Suffolk County SPCA , Suffolk County Department of Health Services and Suffolk County Parks will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, 2024 form 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gardiner County Park, Montauk Highway (Rt. 27A), Bay Shore, NY about one-half mile east of the Robert Moses Causeway. All dogs, cats and ferrets must be older than 4 months, dogs must be leashed, aggressive dogs muzzled and all cats and ferrets must be confined in carriers.

August 31, 2024: Foxwoods Cocktail Carnival
Foxwoods Resort Casino will host its fourth-annual Cocktail Carnival on Aug. 31, featuring fair-themed signature cocktails, food and entertainment reminiscent of a day spent at the fair. Beverage tastings and cocktails will be poured by representatives from many of the state’s beverage suppliers and distributors in the ballroom and on the casino’s Fox Tower Lawn and terrace. A la carte festival food will also be available for purchase. Other amusements will include lawn games, fortune tellers and caricature artists, along with stilt-walkers and aerialists, all contributing to the day’s carnival theme. Targeted Aerial Application of Mosquito Larvicide Over Great Swamp in South Kingstown and Chapman Swamp in Westerly
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is announcing that a licensed contractor, North Fork Helicopters, will conduct an aerial application of mosquito larvicide across 3,000 acres of Chapman Swamp in Westerly and Great Swamp in South Kingstown beginning Thursday, Aug. 29 through Friday, Aug. 30, weather permitting. The application, which consists of pellets that kill mosquito larvae being dropped by a helicopter into the targeted wetlands, will take place between 7 AM and 7 PM. The larvicide applications will not target open bodies of water, and treatment areas do not include Worden Pond in South Kingstown or Chapman Pond in Westerly. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date will be announced. The larvicide used, known as Bti, does not pose a risk to humans or the environment.

Starfires fall in opener to Tipton
The South Adams Starfire football team made the trek down to the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University to open their season against Tipton and would lose to the Blue Devils 27-20. It was a slow start for the black and gold, as they would only garner 33 yards in offense in the first have to fall behind 21-0 at the break. Meanwhile, Tipton could almost do no wrong, scoring on all three of their first half possessions along with their opening drive in the 3rd quarter thanks to senior Calvin Condict. The All Conference running back in the Hoosier Conference would be involved in all the touchdowns for the visitors, scoring on a 3-yard run in the first, a 9-yard run in the 2nd, and a 3-yard run in the 3rd. He also connected with Landon Spiegel on a halfback pass in the 2nd quarter for a 43-yard strike. The only hiccup for the Blue Devils happened on the second drive for the Starfires as they had to punt, the Tipton receiver could not handle the punt and fumbled it back to South Adams at midfield but could do nothing with it.
