Liberty University’s fall camp is in full swing, offering Coach Jaime Chadwell valuable insights into which new recruits and returning players might make a significant impact this season.

The Flames will kick off their 2024 campaign at home against Campbell on August 31, which should serve as a valuable tune-up before Liberty embarks on its second season in Conference USA.

When asked about the progress of the new recruits, Chadwell noted, “They’ve been engaging in various activities outside of football, like kickball, to build relationships with the returning players. We’ve got a lot of talent among our recruits, and they’re starting to compete effectively with the returners.”

Chadwell also addressed the team’s approach to managing the heightened expectations as the No. 1 Group of Five teams entering the season. “We need everyone to come out of fall camp with a hunger to achieve our goals and take it one week at a time,” he said.

The coach highlighted cornerback and wide receiver as the positions with the most uncertainty. “We like to give our depth chart players a chance to prove themselves,” Chadwell explained. “It will come down to who makes the biggest impression before the season starts.”

While Chadwell is confident that the talent is there and someone will step up for the starting positions, those spots remain open. The projected starters include Reese Smith, Donte Lee Jr., and Treon Sibley, with Markel Fortenberry, Kylen Austin, and Tyson Mobley as key contenders behind them. “We have the talent, but nobody has solidified their spot yet,” Chadwell remarked. “We hope that in the coming weeks, someone will step up and prove themselves worthy of a starting role.”

Chadwell also praised quarterback Kaidon Salter for his growth. “He’s become more of a leader for the offense and has learned the importance of communication within his unit,” Chadwell said.

The coach expressed strong confidence in his quarterback and backfield. Running backs Quinton Cooley and Billy Lucas will return as starters for 2024. James Jointer Jr. and Vaughn Blue will support them.

With numerous improvements made over the summer and during fall camp, Jaime Chadwell is optimistic about his new recruits and the team’s potential. The Flames enter the 2024 season with high expectations and a strong desire for success.
