A 13-year-old girl has died after being shot at a mall in Washington. A 16-year-old male has been arrested in connection with her murder.

The Lynnwood Police Department announced that Jayda Woods-Johnson was "tragically murdered" at the Alderwood Mall on Wednesday afternoon. Police said that the girl was shot by a stray bullet that was fired during an “altercation” at the food court.

Two groups of friends got into an altercation in the mall which escalated when a teenage boy pulled out a gun and fired. Woods-Johnson was not involved with either of the groups but was hit by the bullet.

Immediately after, all youths involved in the altercation fled from the mall. Woods-Johnson was unable to be saved.

Police sprung to action by publicly releasing a picture of the suspected shooter. Later that night, the boy in the surveillance footage was brought to the police station by his mother. The 16-year-old male from Edmonds will be “booked into jail for murder” according to the Lynwood Police Department.
