MADERA, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A woman has been arrested after accidentally shooting and killing a man in Madera, according to the Madera Police Department.

Officers say they responded to the 300 block of Washington Court in Madera on Wednesday at 7:09 p.m. regarding a man being “accidentally shot.”

Upon arrival, police say a former roommate of the victim, identified as 51-year-old Maria Morales, was manipulating the firearm in the backyard of a home when she negligently and accidentally discharged it, striking the victim, a 21-year-old man.

Investigators say the man was transported to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives say Morales was subsequently arrested under suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and manslaughter and booked into the Madera County Jail.
