Foundation poured for Dollar Tree in east Emporia
It isn’t paving paradise to put up a parking lot, but construction in northeast Emporia is replacing the Family Fun Center with a Dollar Tree. With the foundation recently poured, Emporia city officials confirmed basic plans for a roughly 9,800 square-foot building at 920 East 12th, between Old Rum’s Liquor and Goodcents. A construction timetable is pending.

Emporia’s latest mural to be featured during First Friday Art Walk
Emporia’s latest mural is almost finished, and it’s ready to be celebrated as part of the city’s First Friday Art Walk. The mural is on the north side of Jack’s Lawn and Pool at 829 Commercial, the featured presenter for Friday’s event. First Friday Art Walk developer Kaila Mock says this is the latest mural through the work of the Community Art Alliance, a venture of Visit Emporia.

City of Emporia Fireworks Display – July 4th
The City of Emporia’s Fourth of July fireworks are scheduled for Thursday, July 4, 2024. The display will be best viewed from the Emporia State University practice fields on the north end of campus and inside Welch Stadium. The soccer pitch on the north end of campus will be closed to the public.

24th and Prairie waterline replacement project set to go under I-35
Work on Emporia’s extensive 24th and Prairie water main replacement project is closing in on a significant milestone. Crews are setting up to bore under Interstate 35 as early work continues. As part of that process, they will need to build a pipe from the east drive of the Emporia Pavilions shopping center to Apple Lane. Additional work involves a smaller water line on the south side of West 24th that will run west from Apple Lane to Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
City Commission deliberates mill levy options for 2025 budget
The Emporia City Commission reviewed options for setting the mill levy for the 2025 fiscal year during their Tuesday study session. The City’s Revenue-Neutral Rate (RNR), as calculated by the County Clerk, is 42.667. In comparison, the final mill levy for 2023 taxes was 44.604. The proposed budget for 2025 includes allocations of 9.5 mills for Bond and Interest, 5 mills for the Library, and .005 mills for Industrial purposes. The General Fund mills will be adjusted based on the total mills approved, with the budget assuming a 3% property tax delinquency rate.
