MFD responds to house fire on Madison's east side

MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Fire Department responded to an east side basement fire Friday morning.

Fire investigators confirmed the fire was unintentional, and the result of an unattended candle in the basement. Two people were in the home at the time of the fire and were alerted to the problem when a smoke alarm went off. Both occupants evacuated safely.

Due to high heat and no visibility, the MFD said firefighters exited the home and attacked the fire from the outside. Once the fire was quenched enough to improve conditions inside, firefighters re-entered the house to fully extinguish the fire.

The MFD said there is extensive smoke damage throughout the house, but the fire was contained to the basement. Three people and two cats were forced out of the home.
