A total of 202 runners and walkers took part in the 2024 Todd Beamer Memorial Run on the Fourth of July in Madras.

The Wapshelis — brother and sister Isaiah and Talise, 2023 and 2024 Madras High School graduates, respectively — were among the big stories of the day. Isaiah won the men’s 10K with a 34:35.34 time, winning by nearly seven minutes over the second-place male, Mark Saul, who ran a 41:11.41.

Talise was second in the women’s division of the 10K, running a 43:57.42. Wapsheli was second only to Ashley Boone, who clocked a new race record for women with a 37:23.74. Boone had set the previous record at last year’s Beamer Memorial.

The 5-K race drew 72 participants. The winner was Joe Hyland in 15:39.27. Hyland ran a 5:02 per mile pace. Chase Anspach was second in 17:07.43 and Beck Anspach third in 17:37.18.

The first woman to finish the 5-K was Justyna Mudy-Mader, in 17:43.18. Madras High middle distance standout Emily Picard was second in 19:33.11 and class of 2023 MHS standout Hannah MacDuffee was third in 20:42.89.

The Madras Runners Club organized the race, which honors Todd Beamer, who was raised in Madras, was a student-athlete at MHS and then went on to become a teacher-coach on the Oregon Coast. He drowned while back in Madras on a run while trying to save family dogs that had gotten into an irrigation ditch. The race had long been organized by the Beamer family, which used proceeds to fund a scholarship in Todd Beamer’s name. The local running club recently stepped up to maintain the event, which is the community’s biggest run of the year.
