Community mourns loss, pays tribute to fallen Mississippi police officer who was friend to many

Flags were lowered to half-staff outside the Lincoln County Courthouse on Friday morning as the community mourned the loss of Summit police officer and Lincoln County resident Troy Floyd, who was killed in the line of duty on Thursday.

At Bertha’s Flower Shop, located at 103 West Chickasaw Street, employees were busy crafting thin blue line ribbons in honor of Floyd. Myrtle Cartwright, the shop’s owner, said they donated the ribbons to police officers, firefighters, ambulance workers, nurses, and military service members. “We are just doing it for Floyd. We knew him basically as a family friend,” Cartwright said. “We felt like supporting our community, and this was the least we could do.”

Black and blue ribbons adorned the door of the Ameriprise Financial office on 1st Street as well, a tribute to the fallen officer. Cartwright’s granddaughter, Kayla Carter, was making larger ribbons, recalling how Floyd would frequently stop by the shop to check on them.

Throughout the day, a sheriff’s deputy, a firefighter from the East Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department, and a Lincoln County E911 Dispatcher visited the shop to pick up ribbons.

The Lincoln County Baptist Association will hold a prayer rally for Floyd at Easthaven’s Cross on Saturday, August 10, at 7 p.m.
