Malakoff ISD seeks low-attendance waiver from eclipse
Debra Wilson, who will become the principal of Malakoff ISD’s newest campus, Malakoff Intermediate School, officially starts July 1. Wilson has been with MISD since 2002 and most recently taught eighth grade U.S. History. The intermediate school will be where the middle school was previously, with the middle school moving into the former high school, which itself moves across the road into a new facility.
3 year old flown to Dallas hospital after near-drowning in Henderson County
HENDERSON COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) - A child nearly drowned on Tuesday, according to a Henderson County fire department. Payne Springs Fire and Rescue said that at around 10:13 Tuesday morning they responded to a call in the Enchanted Oaks area. EMS also responded, they said. They found a 3-year-old child who had nearly drowned in the lake, and began life-saving measures.
Affordable housing complex coming to Athens
ATHENS — An old Athens motel will be converted into a new affordable housing complex. According to our news parter KETK, a Dallas construction company has partnered with the City of Athens. Wallace Ventures’ is converting the old Quality Inn motel off Highway 31 that was vacant for more than 10 years, into “Athens Reserve”, a 122 unit studio apartment complex. Each apartment will just under 300 square feet.
Gun Barrel City police warn residents about vehicle burglaries
GUN BARREL CITY, Texas — Police in Gun Barrel City are urging residents to take precautions following a series of vehicle burglaries. Authorities recommend locking car doors when parked and avoiding leaving high-value items inside vehicles. Firearms should never be left in unattended vehicles, according to a press release from the Gun Barrel City Police Department.
Kenneth George Jr. records three tackles against Ottawa
Ottawa defeated Hamilton, 24-22, Sunday in a Canadian Football League game at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario. Former Vol defensive back Kenneth George Jr. recorded three tackles for the Tiger-Cats. George Jr. played for the Vols from 2018-21 under head coaches Jeremy Pruitt and Josh Heupel. He transferred to Tennessee from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. George Jr. appeared in 33 games, including 10 starts, at Tennessee. He totaled 52 tackles, 10 pass deflections, two fumble recoveries and one interception. In two seasons with Hamilton, George Jr. has appeared in 22 games. He has recorded 63 tackles, two interceptions, one sack and one fumble recovery. City of Athens works to clean up massive wastewater spill
ATHENS, Texas (KLTV) - More than 200,000 gallons of wastewater spilled from a treatment plant in Athens on Saturday. City officials said that the spill occurred around 1 p.m. Saturday and was discovered the following day around 6 a.m. Approximately 215,000 gallons of domestic wastewater spilled from the Athens North Wastewater Treatment Plant into One Mile Creek, which leads to Cane Creek Lake. The spill is said to have occurred when debris in the wastewater tangled a float sensor and caused a pump control to malfunction.

AUSTIN, Texas — A Texas 10 Most Wanted sex offender is back in custody following his recent arrest in Wyoming, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Authorities arrested Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender Ramiro Manuel Dominguez, 35, on June 27 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Dominguez, who was DPS Featured Fugitive in June 2024, was apprehended after DPS Special Agents from Lubbock coordinated with officers from the Cheyenne Police Department, following a tip received last month. A Crime Stoppers reward will be paid for his arrest.
