MANCHESTER – A 14-year-old was seriously injured after being struck by an SUV while riding a bicycle last night, according to officials.

Police said a Dodge Grand Caravan was heading east on Route 37 at around 11:20 p.m. on July 11. As it crossed the intersection with Commonwealth Boulevard, it struck a bicycle, which was split in half by the collision.

The bicyclist, a 14-year-old township resident, was brought to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dodge, Frederick Grimm, 55, of Manahawkin, was unhurt. The SUV had extensive front end damage.

The bicycle didn’t have any electric lights on that are required by law when used at night, police said. The investigation is still ongoing by Patrolman Keith Douglas of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit. Township EMTs and Paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital also responded to the incident.
