Jackson’s Cascades Falls $145K renovation moving forward
JACKSON, MI - Renovation work at one of Jackson’s oldest landmarks is set to move forward this summer through a set of planned electrical upgrades. Members of Jackson County Park Board approved a proposal to accept a bid in the amount of $145,236 from the Clarklake-based A Plus Electric Inc. to handle electrical upgrades at Jackson’s Cascades Falls.

Jets Air Station Opening Day. After months of anticipation, the finishing touches have been made, and the Jets Air Station is ready to welcome guests! The hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays & Sundays (hours may change based on usage). This brand-new inflatable air dome provides more space for college athletics, student and community workouts, and public events. Inside, the Air Station features a rubberized floor with four basketball courts, four volleyball courts, six pickleball courts, and two tennis courts. A marked walking track surrounds the perimeter of the athletic courts. The starting setup includes one tennis court, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and a pickleball court, which may change based on usage. To meet visitors’ needs, there are restrooms, a greeters’ station, bag/shoe storage, a lounge/seating area and vending machines. Guests may check out tennis rackets and balls, volleyballs, pickleball paddles and balls and basketballs. All users must sign in on arrival, every time. Usage of the Jet Air Station will be free over the summer; memberships will be offered for the fall semester, with information to come.

JACKSON, MI -- The Jackson County Animal Shelter, 3770 Spring Arbor Road, has many pets available for adoption. Mr. Deeds is a 2-year-old American Staffordshire mix who came in as a stray. He loves to get out of his kennel and go for walks, hang out with his human and get outside.

'Intentionally set fire' burns $22,500 worth of hay in Lenawee County, fire department says
MORENCI, Mich. — A fire that the Morenci Fire Department says was intentionally set Thursday night burned $22,500 worth of hay in a field in Chesterfield Township. The fire department said on social media Friday afternoon that it responded to the outdoor fire off of County Road 15-1 just before 10 p.m. on Thursday and found approximately 300 large square hay bales, along with another stack of bales nearby in the same field, on fire.

First Congregational Church of Riga planning Bicentennial Celebration
On Saturday, July 13, 2024, the members of the First Congregational Church of Riga, UCC will look back in time as they celebrate the Bicentennial of their church edifice. In 1823, at a time in history when the Erie Canal was nearing completion, 125 members of the First Congregational Society of Riga finalized their pledge to support the building of a permanent house of worship on the land of Elihu Church, brother of Churchville founder Samuel Church. The Society, which was organized on December 9, 1806, was one of the first religious societies organized west of the Genesee River under the title of “First Congregational Society of West Pulteney in the County of Genesee.”

11-Year-Old Chelsea Resident to Represent Midwest at National Scottish Highland Dance Competition
Chelsea’s Sophia Demaagd is headed to the U.S. National Scottish Highland Dance Championship after winning the 10-12 age group in the Midwest Regional Competition. Sophia, an 11-year-old home school student who just finished sixth grade, started dance lessons when she was 3.5 years old. Sophia was inspired by her older sister who started Highland Dancing after seeing it at a family visit to the Alma Highland Festival and Games. Sophia took part in her first competition at age four.

Jackson's beer production goes back further than your neighbor's grandfather making it in his bathtub during wartime. The Eberle Brewing Company was founded in Jackson in 1897-1898 (some historians disagree on which year) by Carl Eberle. Carl purchased a large building (a brewery) that sat at 901 Water Street (now an empty lot).
