Rivers and streams in parts of southern Minnesota are overflowing their banks after three days of heavy rain, but forecasters say the worst of it is over.

Left behind are waterlogged fields and washed out roadways, with many closures reported by MinDOT .

"There are some washed out roads southwest of Mankato, the Waseca area, over to Saint James, that's the area that was hit the hardest," said National Weather Service forecaster Jacob Beitlich.

The heavy rain had been falling in the region since Thursday night.

"Several reports, widespread, four to five inches, with isolated amounts six to seven, even a little bit higher in some locations," Beitlich said.

There are also some road disruptions reported in southwestern Minnesota south of Marshall.

The forecast indicates southern Minnesota should not any more heavy rain this weekend.

Parts of northern Minnesota are drying out after heavy rain caused flooding earlier in the week, and the region was spared from additional rainfall on Friday night.

The nasty weather had threatened the start of Grandma's Marathon along Lake Superior's north shore, but the race went off on time.
