Best friends for decades killed in OBX crash

MANTEO, N.C. (WAVY) – Two women, both 82 years old, were killed in a crash in Manteo, North Carolina Thursday.

The accident happened June 27 just before noon on US 64 in front of the Pirate’s Cove Marina.

North Carolina Highway confirmed to WAVY that a vehicle driven by Janice Bateman failed to yield the right of way while turning into Pirate’s Cove and was hit by a pickup truck. Both Bateman and her passenger, Frances Brinn, died at local hospitals.

“They were best friends for decades and were fishing buddies,” said Highway Patrol Sgt. D.C. Pridgen.

No charges were filed in connection to this fatal crash.

Bateman’s obituary says she was an avid fisherman. She had four children, 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

An obituary for Brinn was not available at the time of publication.
