Southport loses ETJ as legislators pass HB 911
The City of Southport has lost its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). Southport’s authority to exercise planning and development regulations beyond its contiguous corporate limits was prohibited by the North Carolina General Assembly, with a final 85-30 vote in the House of Representatives on June 26 sealing it.
Davis named All-State Class 3A East Pitcher of Year
The North Carolina Softball Coaches Association has announced that South Brunswick rising senior Kina Davis is the Class 3A East Pitcher of the Year. This is the second consecutive year Davis has received the honor. This is the third time she has been named to the all-state team.
Cape Fear Radio station begins broadcasting
Southport-Oak Island Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Cape Fear Radio June 20 at its studio at The State Port Pilot building on Moore Street in Southport. Cape Fear Radio is a new streaming local radio station focused exclusively on the communities of Southport, Oak Island, Caswell Beach, St. James, Boiling Spring Lakes and Bald Head Island. It began airing June 28 and features music from the 60s through contemporary sounds, plus local news, arts and culture and local events. N.C. firefighters called to remove 12-foot alligator from road
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — This wasn’t exactly getting a cat out of a tree. Firefighters with Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue were given an unusual task early Saturday morning when the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office called to report there was a large alligator blocking a road. In a news release, the fire department says the alligator, which it described as a “dinosaur” and a “dragon,” was lunging at passing cars.
