Upcoming and new additions to the Village of Honor in Benzie Co.
BENZIE COUNTY — The Village of Honor is hoping to raise $50,000 for Maley Park, because if they reach their goal, they will be matched by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. “This is a popular picnic spot for people in the area. There are many more children coming to our village and immediate area. We want to get kids outside playing instead of on video screens all the time, and not only for the community people, but for our visitors,” said Bill Ward, Village of Honor president. With the need for more funds, there are different events like a cornhole tournament and a car show where the proceeds will go back to the playground. Ward said, “We have soft commitments for $15,000 or $20,000 from some of the area businesses, and we’re looking to raise the rest from individual donations or businesses.”

A Brief History of FishPass
After many years of planning (and a few more years of legal wrangling), a state-of-the-art scientific facility has broken ground in Traverse City. But what exactly is FishPass? What will it do and why is it here? What will it mean for the river and the general public? This week's Northern Express, sister publication of The Ticker, looks at all those questions and more. As writer Art Bukowski notes, one thing’s for certain: Those involved could not be more excited that the enterprise has moved from concept to construction.
State Street in Traverse City closed for water line replacement Wednesday to Thursday
TRAVERSE CITY — Motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, and residents should be aware that Team Elmer’s, in coordination with the City of Traverse City Water/Wastewater Maintenance Division, will be closing State Street from Hope Street to 723 State Street for the Water Service Line Replacement Project on Wednesday, July 17. The work within the roadway is anticipated to be completed by end of day on Thursday, July 18. In addition to the street closure, the sidewalk on the north side of State Street will be closed. The sidewalk on the south side of the street will remain open. The work will generate dust and noise, and may cause disruptions to pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular traffic. Appropriate signage will be in place, and access to all homes and businesses will be maintained at all times.
First City Drainage District Eyed for Eighth Street Area
Traverse City commissioners will vote tonight (Monday) to pursue creating the city’s first drainage district, a major step toward addressing stormwater runoff in the city. While several locations were considered, staff are recommending establishing the first drain in the Eighth Street area, which has experienced high flows during rain events and quality issues where polluted water runs off into East Grand Traverse Bay – the source of the city’s drinking water.
Opioid Funds Could Expand Quick Response Team Countywide, Support Drug Programs
Grand Traverse County commissioners will vote Wednesday to spend over a half million dollars in opioid settlement funds on three local projects, including expanding the Traverse City Police Department’s Quick Response Team to serve clients countywide, enhancing the local Drug Court, and creating a syringe disposal program for the homeless encampment at the Pines. The projects represent the first major disbursals from the county’s opioid settlement funds, which total $1.3 million to date and are expected to reach several million dollars more in the coming years.
