Minneapolis man struck and killed by motorist in Wisconsin, officials say
WASHBURN COUNTY, Wis. — An investigation is underway after a Minneapolis man was struck and killed by a motorist in Wisconsin.The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said it happened Sunday night on Highway 63 near County Road F, which is just south of Minong in Washburn County. A 55-year-old Texas man was driving north on the highway when he struck the 28-year-old man who was standing in the roadway, Wisconsin officials said. The man hit was wearing dark clothing. The driver was not injured in the crash. It's unknown if charges will be filed. Officials say alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The Washburn County Sheriff's Office, Washburn County Highway Department, North Ambulance and Hayward Fire Department assisted in response to the crash. Washburn County is in northern Wisconsin, which is around 130 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
Take Precautions: Heat Advisories in place for today
It is hot and sticky, a Heat Advisory is in place from 1:00 p.m. this afternoon to 8:00 p.m. for portions of the Northland. The Advisory includes Pine County in Minnesota and Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer and Price Counties in Wisconsin. With high heat values, it could feel like close to 100 degrees.

More than 10,000 incoming University of Minnesota students have been arriving on the system’s five campuses over the past few weeks, joining tens of thousands of returning students for the upcoming fall semester. (AP) — Visitors to the Minnesota State Fair sought relief from soaring temperatures under misters Monday while some Midwestern schools dismissed classes early or called off sports practices. Highs approaching the century mark combined with oppressive humidity to made it feel like 105 to 115 degrees (40 to 46 Celsius) across the country’s heartland, the National Weather Service said. It issued heat warnings or advisories for large swaths of Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. “There’s going to be some records in play today,” warned Ashton Robinson Cook, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland. Several cities opened cooling centers, including in Des Moines, Iowa, where city buses were available to give people free rides to the sites. Experts urged those venturing outside to drink plenty of water.

UNDATED (WJON News) -- The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry is reminding employers ahead of January 1st that new minimum-wage rates will be going into effect. The 2024 legislature revised the law to remove the reduced minimum wages for small employers so that the minimum wage rate will be $11.13 for all employers including J-1 visa wages for hotels, motels, and lodging businesses. The changes also include workers under 18-years-old.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — Minnesota State Fair police say its officers had to respond to two violent incidents on Saturday night, including a possible stabbing.Police say "an altercation involving multiple individuals" broke out at Underwood Street and Carnes Avenue just before 9 p.m. One person suffered an apparent head injury and was treated by medics on-site.
