Habitat for Humanity of Collier County marked the final home closings last week for its latest affordable housing community, Whitaker Woods in East Naples. With the last eight homes purchased, the community is now fully occupied with 125 families. The final step is for Habitat to hand the community’s management responsibilities over to its residents. The organization will work with community members to establish a community association and elect members into leadership positions on the board. The neighborhood will then be responsible for its own management, working closely with a professional property management company to maintain community standards. Collier County Housing Operations department data shows nearly 60% of the jobs in the county pay less than $45,000 annually, and more than 50,000 people commute into Collier County each day for work. Habitat Collier receives about 28 inquiries for each home it can fund, build and sell.
