OSF receives Greenhealth Emerald award for environmental sustainability efforts
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - OSF Saint Anthony received the GreenHeath Emerald award for its environmental sustainability efforts on Friday. OSF won the award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. Sustainability in health care is looking at how operations affect the health of the environment and the health of patients, staff, visitors, and the community. OSF sustainability strategies include lowering energy consumption, minimizing and recycling waste, and addressing concerning chemicals.

UW Health shares sarcoma risk factors
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - July is Sarcoma Awareness Month and UW Health shares what sarcoma is, the signs to look for, who is most commonly diagnosed and how it is treated. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that appears in in two forms: the first being bone sarcoma and the second soft tissues sarcoma which can appear in muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons and the lining of the joints. UW Health says around 13,500 cases of soft tissue sarcoma are expected to be diagnosed in the US in 2024. While a rare cancer in adults, between 1,500 and 1,700 children are diagnosed each year throughout the nation.

Rockford-area SNAP recipients may qualify for food replacement
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Help may be available for some people in the stateline who had to throw out food due to widespread power outages following severe storms. The Winnebago County Emergency Management Agency says Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP recipients who experienced power outages lasting longer than four hours can request food replacements within 10 days of the event. According to the Illinois Department of Human Services, food bought with SNAP benefits may also be replaced if it was destroyed in a fire, flood, tornado or other devastating event.
