    Chicken and dumplings is a popular Southern comfort food that consists of chicken cooked in water. The dish varies depending on the few ingredients that are used. The two main ingredients for this recipe are just chicken and biscuits.

    The chicken

    This Virginia woman likes to use chicken parts. Sometimes, she uses only chicken legs, chicken thighs, chicken wings, or chicken breasts. There is nothing wrong with mixing and matching, but she prefers using the same part throughout her dish. The thighs are her favorite parts to use.

    The chicken is cooked until it falls apart into bite-size pieces. Chopped celery or celery seeds, along with mushroom pieces can be used for added flavor. Some cooks add carrots, green peas, and onions, but they are optional.

    The dumplings

    There are typically three different types of dumplings that can be used.

    • Drop: Simply scoop the dough up right from a bowl and drop it into the broth.
    • Rolled: The dough is rolled out, cut into shapes, and cooked in the broth.
    • Biscuit: Store-bought biscuits from the can are added to the broth. The Virginia woman uses this to make dumplings.
