    The population of Richmond, Virginia is 229,395, according to the last census. There are many things residents say they love about living in the River City. Only In Your State gives a list of those reasons.

    1. It's "The Best Town Ever"

    In 2012, Outside Magazine listed Richmond as "the best town ever." Many residents agree with that assessment.

    2. The arts

    A Gogobot study shows that residents love the incredible murals around the city. The study rated Richmond as the "Most Artistic Mid-Sized City in America."

    4. Education

    Richmond has impressive schools at all levels of education. With over 33,000 students, Virginia Commonwealth University is one of the largest schools in Virginia. Other colleges include Virginia Union University and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

    5. Restaurants

    National Geographic notes Richmond as a "top destination" for food. New restaurants are opening in the River City all the time, such as Harry's at Hofheimer and Jackie's Southern Style Restaurant.

    According to Forbes, Richmond is the third of the ten best places for finding employment. Richmond is one of America’s best mid-sized cities for jobs. The River City Fortune 500 companies, such as CarMax, Dominion Energy, and Markel.

    7. Festivals

    Richmond has several festivals throughout the year. Enjoy live folk music at the Richmond Folk Festival and the Richmond Jazz and Music Festival. Attend the HeART & Soul Brewfest for hearty soul food, hip-hop concerts, and an epic urban art collection.

    8. Family destination

    TripAdvisor has named Richmond a "Top Historical Family Destination." There’s no shortage of things to do with kids in and around Richmond.     Richmond is one of the top beer destinations in the country. Sample a little bit of everything with a trip down the Richmond Beer Trail, totaling 35 stops.

    13. Outdoor activities

    Richmond has plenty of outdoor activities to keep residents from being bored. There is whitewater rafting, jogging, or bird-watching at James River Park. A 52-mile path of the Virginia Capital Trail is ideal for biking. Go rock-climbing, take a walk, or sit and enjoy the waterfront from the riverbank at Belle Isle.
