A New COVID Variant, HV.1, Is Now Dominant. These Are Its Most Common Symptoms

As winter sets in, the United States is witnessing a surge in respiratory viruses, with COVID-19 continuing to impact lives. The latest development in this ongoing pandemic is the emergence of a new variant, HV.1, now the dominant strain in the U.S. This variant, a subvariant of the highly contagious omicron, has quickly become a topic of concern and interest.

HV.1, first identified in the U.S. during late summer, has swiftly overtaken other variants like EG.5. As of early December, it accounts for nearly 30% of new COVID-19 infections in the country. This rapid rise to dominance is a clear indication of its high transmissibility.

    Transmissibility and Severity

HV.1 is highly transmissible, much like its omicron predecessors. There's a possibility that it might spread more effectively than previous strains. However, it does not seem to cause more severe disease or lead to increased hospitalizations. The variant might be slightly better at evading immunity from past infections or vaccinations, but this is not a cause for significant concern.

    Symptoms of HV.1

The symptoms associated with HV.1 are similar to those seen in recent variants:

    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or stuffiness
    • Runny nose
    • Cough
    • Fatigue
    • Headache
    • Muscle aches
    • Fever or chills

These symptoms are primarily concentrated in the upper respiratory tract, starting with a sore throat, followed by congestion or a runny nose. Coughing, while not a primary symptom, can persist as a kind of chronic bronchitis.

    Testing and Detection

All standard COVID-19 tests, including PCR and rapid antigen tests, can detect HV.1. Testing remains a crucial tool, especially since symptoms of HV.1 are similar to other respiratory viruses like RSV, influenza, and the common cold.

    Staying Safe

To protect yourself and others from HV.1, it's important to:

    • Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines.
    • Get tested if you exhibit symptoms.
    • Isolate if you test positive for COVID-19.
    • Avoid contact with sick individuals.
    • Improve ventilation or opt for outdoor gatherings.
    • Wash your hands frequently.
    • Wear a mask in crowded, indoor spaces.
