City’s first radio station spins classic country off the air, totally on the web

Don Lansdale spent 25 years in radio, working at one of the most popular classic country stations in Lansing, Mich., WITL.

So, what did he do after retirement? He found himself dabbling in podcasting, like extended talk radio for the internet age. And then, you guessed it, an old habit caught up with him — traditional radio.

But this time it’s off the air and on the web.

He calls it Copa Radio . The online channel spins the country classics around the clock, some older than the hills and dustier than a truck stop in Tuba City.

Lansdale retired to Maricopa in 2015.

“I then researched internet radio and it showed it was becoming more popular worldwide,” he said.

The big difference is he didn’t have to buy a radio station, complete with a big studio, office, staff and transmitter tower.

His radio channel will offer top news headlines from InMaricopa , weather and sports as well as country oldies.

Copa Radio is brought to you by Live 365, a company that provides software for internet radio stations.

“They mimic actual radio stations in every way that you might imagine,” Lansdale said.

While the online broadcast is automated, the program allows Landsdale to jump online and broadcast whenever he wants.

Now he produces a morning show and an afternoon drive-time show.

“Tune in and let the music and stories of Copa Radio transport you to a world of county charm and community spirit,” the channel’s Live 365 profile states.

“I’m billing myself as Maricopa’s first radio station, because in a sense it is,” Lansdale said, adding it’s all professionally done.
