Alterra stoplight coming — just not anytime soon

A traffic signal is coming to the intersection of John Wayne and Alterra Parkways, city officials today confirmed. It just won’t be anytime soon.

The intersection, now a two-way stop, requires drivers leaving Copper Sky Recreation Complex and the southern part of Alterra to turn onto a 45-mile-per-hour thoroughfare.

A gnarly three-car crash that blocked traffic there last week prompted InMaricopa to ask city officials what their plans were for the intersection.

City planners have budgeted $1.5 million for the signal project this fiscal year, according to city spokesperson Monica Williams.

“We do not have a schedule at this time,” Williams said, “however, some pending development on the east side of John Wayne Parkway will likely impact the construction timing.”

“We anticipate it being constructed while the adjacent property is developed,” she said.

Nothing has broken ground at the property. Plans for a hospital waffled for the last three years but were recently squashed for good . Williams could not immediately comment on nearby development.

Two other traffic signals are in the works: one at West Honeycutt Road and North Rancho Mirage Boulevard, and the other at West Bowlin and North White and Parker Roads .
