Fair Bluff Watermelon Festival set for Saturday, July 27
FAIR BLUFF, N.C. (WECT) - The Fair Bluff Watermelon Festival is inviting the community to celebrate at Riverside Drive this Saturday, July 27. Registration for contests runs from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The big watermelon weigh-in and awards presentation will be at 10 a.m., the youth and adult watermelon eating contests will be at 10:30 a.m. and the youth and adult quality watermelon awards presentation will be at 11 a.m. You can register online for contests until 5 p.m. on Friday.
A cut above the rest: Fort Liberty's 84-year-old barber to be inducted into national hall of fame
A Lumberton man who has dedicated his life to cutting soldiers' hair at Fort Liberty is being recognized by the National Barber Hall of Fame this fall.Over the course of almost 60 years, Travis Bell said he's given haircuts to about 16,000 soldiers at Fort Liberty. About 100 of them have been four-star generals."They've just all been good to me," Bell said.The 84-year-old's longevity in running the XVIII Airborne's barbershop at Fort Liberty is why he's getting inducted into the National Barber Museum and Hall of Fame in September. Lumbee Tribe hosts insurance information sessions, back to school events for community
ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WPDE) — Community members are hosting health and life insurance information sessions at the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. There will be insurance providers on-site to speak with community members on Tuesday at the Hawkeye Boys & Girls Club at 3066 Blue Springs Road in Red Springs.
Mayor McColl Congratulates “Youth Of The Year” Jerrion Ross
Congratulations to Mr. Jerrion Ross. He has been named “Youth of the Year” on behalf of Body of God by Faith Apostolic, Inc. Mr. Jerrion Ross raised over three hundred dollars in great endeavors to win this award during the 2024 State Youth Convention. Not only did Jerrion win an award he was also able to spend time with the Mayor of Dillon, Mr. Tally McColl. Jerrion was able to chat and enjoy lunch with Mayor McColl. Saturday is Watermelon Festival Day in Fair Bluff. Columbuscountynews.com will be livestreaming the parade at 12:30 p.m. with commentary by Darrell Jackson. This weekend will be your last chance to visit several of the century-old buildings downtown. Much of the downtown area is set to be razed due to flood damage. There will also be a guest book where you can share your memories of Fair Bluff as it used to be.

Chris Ray Named Dillon District Four’s New Director Of Personnel
Chris Ray has been named Dillon District Four’s new Director of Personnel. Chris has worked the entirety of his fifteen-year career for Dillon District Four. He transitioned into his new role after serving as Lake View High School’s principal for the 23-24 school year and LVHS’s assistant principal from 2021-2023. Prior to working at LVHS, Chris spent the previous twelve years at JV Martin Junior High, Dillon Middle School, and Dillon High School, where he served as a teacher, school counselor, and coach.
