California has launched a new, statewide initiative with NVIDIA, a technology company headquartered in Santa Clara, CA. Community members strolled along the newly reconstructed Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood in this photograph in the Aug. 23, 2001, issue of the Beverly Press and Park Labrea News. The crowd was estimated to include more than 30,000 people who came out to celebrate completion of the $34 million project to beautify the city’s “Main Street.” West Hollywood took control of the portion of Santa Monica Boulevard running through the city from the state in 1997 and launched a major rehabilitation project, which included new paving, sidewalks, pedestrian plazas and landscaping. The city also highlighted the history of Santa Monica Boulevard, which is part of historic Route 66. Route 66 is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
