In one week, the 2024 Summer Olympics begin in Paris. USC will send many athletes to France in search of gold medals and athletic glory. USC is a football school, but USC is also an Olympic powerhouse. The greatest sports streak at USC could be the football team’s 34-game winning streak from the middle of the 2003 season up to the 2006 Rose Bowl against Texas. It could also be the run of five straight College World Series championships from 1970 through 1974. Yet, there’s another USC sports streak which currently sits at 112 years and is likely to last for a long time to come.

The four conductors selected by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil as 2024/25 Dudamel Fellows are Holly Hyun Choe, born in South Korea and raised in Los Angeles, and principal conductor of the chamber orchestra Ensemble Reflektor, Artiste Associé for L’Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, former assistant conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under Paavo Järvi, selected for the German Music Council’s Grant Forum Dirigieren (2018), Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award recipient, Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship scholarship recipient, and participant in the Peter Eötvös Foundation Mentoring Programme; Dayner Tafur-Díaz, born in Peru, who won the German Conducting Award (October 2023), First Prize in the second edition of the International Opera Conducting Competition of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège (Belgium, August 2022) and Second Prize in the conducting competition of the University of Almería (Spain, November 2022) and was selected as one of 20 finalists in the 2023 Mahler Competition; Luis Castillo-Briceño (pictured), born in Costa Rica, who is the Conducting Fellow of the London Philharmonic Orchestra for the 2023/24 season, an Equilibrium Young Artist mentored by Barbara Hannigan, and a designated winner in the Rotterdam International Conducting Competition 2025.; and Molly Turner, a Chinese-born conductor and composer from Tacoma, Washington, who is the Conducting Fellow with the New World Symphony and studied under the guidance of Esa-Pekka Salonen as a Salonen Fellow at the Colburn School’s Conservatory of Music. Dodgers Roster: Joe Kelly Activated Off 60-Day Injured List
The Los Angeles Dodgers reinstated Joe Kelly from the 60-day injured list and added him to their active roster as they begin the second half of the season. Massive fire in downtown LA destroys 2 buildings, injures firefighter
A massive fire that broke out Friday morning near a storage area in downtown Los Angeles destroyed two buildings, damaged several others and even sent a firefighter to the hospital.Fire crews responded to the area near Kohler and E 7th streets, close to the Fashion District, just after 2 a.m. The fire was so big, it quickly spread to several nearby buildings."Firefighters used ladder pipes, large-diameter hand lines and portable monitors to keep persistent water flow on the fire," said the Los Angeles Fire Department in an update. "Ultimately, it took over 170 firefighters 5 hours and 15 minutes to extinguish the flames."One firefighter sustained a knee injury and was sent to a local hospital in fair condition.No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
