James V. Williams, Jr.
We are saddened by the death of James Varnado Williams, Jr., age 83, of Trent Woods, on June 26, 2024. He was a kind and generous man who always put others before himself. He loved reading, playing tennis, sailing, and spending time with his family. He graduated from N.C. State University in 1965 and served as an officer in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elsie; his children, Jay and (Samantha) Williams and Ann Jones; his grandchildren, Caroline Williams, Liza Williams, Charlie Jones, and Fletcher Jones; two sisters, Alicia Williams and Hope Williams, his brother Burrell and (Nancy) Williams and his nephew Rob Williams. We would like to thank those of you who encouraged, inspired, and helped him through his long illness. He even became an accomplished boxer during that time. Never doubt for a minute how much he appreciated every one of you. We thank you so much for all of your kindness to him! A family gathering will be held in remembrance of “ Doe” at a later date. He will be dearly missed and always in our hearts.
Ilse Wangerin
Ilse Wangerin of New Bern passed away peacefully on Monday, July 8. She was born to Walter and Gretchen Mohr in Kiel, Germany, on May 15, 1934. In 1954, she immigrated to New York City, where she worked in the banking industry. It was here she met her husband, Donald Wangerin, of 45 years. After several moves across the country, they settled in Cary., where they continued to raise their family. After retirement, they moved to New Bern to be closer to family. Her family included children: David Wangerin (Rebecca), Steven Wangerin (Cathy), and Doris Smith (Gary). Her family included six grandchildren: Nathan and Christopher Lile, Stephanie Wangerin Dameworth (Taylor), Amy Wangerin, Hannah, and Dylan Smith. She is also survived by a cousin, Renate Anker of Kiel, Germany. Ilse and her husband Donald, who preceded her in death in 2004, enjoyed traveling and watching their children and grandchildren play sports. Ilse enjoyed traveling the world, reading, playing tennis, playing bridge, and needlepoint, and spending time with family and friends. Most recently, she enjoyed spending time with her friend Harry Kling. The matriarch of our family was greatly loved and will be greatly missed. The Memorial service will be held on July 20 at 1 p.m. at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern, N.C. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the NC Wildlife Federation, North Carolina Community Foundation, and Onslow Caring Communities Foundation. Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Ilse Wangerin.

NC Democratic Party office vandalized after Trump assassination attempt, officials say
A North Carolina Democratic Party office in Carteret County was vandalized Saturday night.Officials said someone threw rocks and a concrete planter through the window of the office in downtown Morehead City.This comes after the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania Saturday.
