MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WITN) - A county Democratic headquarters sustained damage to a window on Sunday morning, leaving employees working from home. The headquarters, located at 7th St. and Arendell St., was targeted when rocks and a concrete planter were thrown through a window. Pastor James H. Gurganus, 92, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Carteret Health Care. A funeral service to honor James’ life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 17th, at Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Mitchell Parker, Rev. Freddie Braswell, Rev. State delays requirement for mandatory reporting of recreational landings of five fish species
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has delayed for one-year new harvest reporting requirements for recreational and commercial fisheries. The controversial rule, which the commission adopted in in June after the N.C. General Assembly mandated it through legislation adopted last year, was to have gone into effect on Dec. 1, 2024 but will not become effective until Dec. 1, 2025.
