MCPD Investigates Vandalism at County Democratic Party Headquarters
On Sunday, July 14, 2024, at approximately 7:28 a.m., officers with the Morehead City Police Department were dispatched to a broken window at the Carteret County Democratic Party Headquarters located at 700 Arendell Street in Morehead City, North Carolina. This incident is currently under investigation and updates will be provided as the case progresses.

Pastor James H. Gurganus, 92, of Newport, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at Carteret Health Care. A funeral service to honor James’ life will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 17th, at Holly Springs Free Will Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Mitchell Parker, Rev. Freddie Braswell, Rev. David Charles Hansley, and Rev. Tony Russell. Interment will follow at Amariah Garner Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior.
State delays requirement for mandatory reporting of recreational landings of five fish species
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has delayed for one-year new harvest reporting requirements for recreational and commercial fisheries. The controversial rule, which the commission adopted in in June after the N.C. General Assembly mandated it through legislation adopted last year, was to have gone into effect on Dec. 1, 2024 but will not become effective until Dec. 1, 2025.
